From the Zoe Holliday files:
Once upon a time, not so long ago, I was a single mom with a small toddler. In looking at the bills I had to pay and the cost of a christmas tree, I called a friend and asked her if she thought my little one would notice if I didn't buy a Christmas tree. She assured me that he was very little and no, he wouldn't notice. Her confirmation about what I suspected made me feel a lot less guilty about spending tree money on other necessities. And he was so little, he wouldn't notice. Would he? No, of course not.
The next day, on the way home from day care my toddler asked me when we would get a tree like the one at his school. I sighed at his response as I felt my shoulders weigh down. "We'll talk about it later" I told him and changed the subject.
Later that evening my friend showed up at my door, unannounced. She had with her a Christmas tree, lights, ornaments, a bottle of wine and film and two more friends.
It was one of the nicest things another woman has ever done for me.
Let me know if you have one to share.
